China had wind-hauled trawlers, such as the "Qianfeng," as early as the Ming Dynasty. In the late 19th century, Western Europe first developed motorized trawlers, which were subsequently manufactured worldwide. In the 1950s, Britain developed stern slipway trawlers, which have become the main type of trawler in the world. China imported its first motorized trawler, the "Fuhai," from Germany in 1905 by Zhang Jian; and built its first steel trawler in 1912.
Trawls are powerful, and after the catch, a fishing moratorium is generally observed.
